HOPE STARTS HERE STORIES
Nnenna
As a young girl in West Africa, Nnenna always dreamed of finishing school.
She loved to learn.
Her favorite days were when she sat in the classroom with her hand raised high, eager to answer her teacher’s questions. But dreams like hers often come with a heavy price.
Nnenna's family lived in deep poverty. They could barely afford food, let alone school fees. When it came time for high school, the decision was painful but simple—they told her they couldn’t send her anymore.
But Nnenna was determined.
She decided she would find a way to pay for school herself, even if it cost her everything. She turned to prostitution, believing it was the only way to pay for her education.
By day, she sat quietly in the classroom, taking notes and reciting lessons. By night, she worked on the streets, doing whatever it took to earn enough to return to school the next morning.
She kept her secret carefully hidden.
One evening, her teacher—our current partner in West Africa, named BBC—was out driving back from the cinema when Nnenna approached her car thinking BBC was a customer.
At first, BBC didn’t believe it. She thought maybe she was mistaken.
But then Nnenna looked up.
Their eyes met.
In that moment, the teacher didn’t see a prostitute. This was her own student. She saw a young girl with potential, with a bright mind, who should have been in school—not on the street.
BBC’s heart broke.
She could have looked away. She could have convinced herself it wasn’t her problem. But instead, she thought,
She’s my daughter.
This was in 1990. That encounter changed everything.
BBC started a ministry to serve girls like Nnenna. In 2023, she partnered with Project Rescue in West Africa to open a home for girls trapped in exploitation.
Today, Nnenna is no longer trapped. She has completed her education and no longer in exploitation.
Through Nnenna, God changed the direction of BBC’s life.
And through BBC, He restored Nnenna’s life and continues to bring hope and restoration to women and girls just like her.
