For generations, people in her community had faced discrimination, hostility, and persecution from those around them. When the violence escalated, families were forced to flee. Men were killed, and many women and children endured horrific abuse and were treated as slaves.

Amid the violence and fear, Mariam escaped with her young daughter, Lina, determined to keep her safe.

The years that followed were marked by uncertainty. Like many displaced families, they moved from place to place searching for safety before eventually settling in a refugee camp.

Though they had escaped the violence, rebuilding a life from nothing proved difficult.

Today, Mariam and Lina live together in a small refugee shelter. Lina is now 24 years old, but years of displacement prevented her from receiving a formal education.

Neither she nor her mother has a national identification card, creating obstacles that affect nearly every aspect of daily life.

Mariam also struggles with asthma, and her health requires constant care. Because Lina is her mother's primary caregiver, she rarely leaves her side.

Together, they operate a small place where they try to earn a modest income to support themselves. Some days they make enough to meet their needs. Other days, they simply do the best they can with what they have.

When Project Rescue's partner in this region visited their home, they spent time listening to Mariam and Lina's concerns about the future. Living in displacement can bring many worries, especially for women with limited resources and support.

During the visit, the team reminded them that ultimately no one can truly protect a home the way God can, who is their shield and provider.

Mariam and Lina's circumstances remain challenging, but they continue moving forward together. Through years of hardship, loss, and uncertainty, they have held on to one another. Their story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the hope that a brighter future is still possible.
