My Summer With Project Rescue
HEIDI VOLKL SPENT THE SUMMER OF 2013 INTERNING WITH PROJECT RESCUE. THIS IS HER INTERNSHIP STORY:
“My summer internship working with Project Rescue was incredible, to say the very least. My partner and I spent a month in a town working in a girl’s group home that served children of brothel workers. These girls were from the ages of 4 to 7 years old.
Project Rescue not only served their spiritual needs in ministering to them about Christ, but also their educational, health, food, and housing needs. We taught them the beginning lessons of English through Rosetta Stone and also created and facilitated Creative Arts lesson plans that focused on Scripture as part of their healing process.
Many of the girls were brought to the home by their mother, or surprisingly the madams overseeing the brothels. The reason for this was often because the madams felt that the children should not be growing up in that environment and wanted more for their future.
The special feature of Project Rescue is that their treatment approach is very holistic. They seek redemption in not only the survivors, but the brothel owners, madams, and customers. This approach to treatment has stuck with me not only through my vocational life, but my personal life as well. It stretched my vision for what Mercy should look like. My internship was the most concrete format in training me for future work in aftercare treatment for sex trafficking survivors.”
