Project Rescue Home of Hope to Open in Moldova

Human trafficking in Moldova is very real. The numbers are staggering and estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. In the past, most trafficked Moldavians were taken to Europe. Now many are taken to Turkey and the Middle East where the demand has grown and anti-trafficking efforts have not yet taken root. Often, Moldovan women trapped in this nightmare are never found. A small percentage are discovered in police raids and returned home to their home country. Full of guilt and shame for the life they were forced to live, they often struggle once back. They see no hope for the future and their shameful past causes alienation from the local community.

Fortunately, there are relief organizations such as the International Organization for Migration and La Strada that operate interim homes for these rescued women. The women, however, are allowed only a month's stay; simply not enough time to deal with the emotional pain resulting from being trafficked.

That's where Project Rescue's efforts fill the void to respond to this urgent need for a longer-term solution. A partially finished Home of Hope has been purchased in Moldova and construction will be completed and the home open and operating by January 2008. Rescued women reentering Moldova will be offered a safe place where they can receive vocational training, life skills, education, counseling and medical care. Small business fundamentals will also be taught, thus paving the path for the girls' future of independent living.

Within the Home of Hope, each woman is allowed to stay until she determines she is ready for independence. Help from you to aid these young women in solidifying their new way of life is critical. It is the difference between a life of slavery and life of freedom for the trafficked women of Moldova. Any contribution is greatly appreciated!

Below are the monthly operational costs for the Moldova Home of Hope:
Staffing $600/month
Utilities $300/month
Food $500/month
Educational costs $500/month
Micro-Enterprise Development $200/month
Total: $2100/month

International Curriculum to be Finalized October 2007

Project Rescue serves as lead organization for a curriculum development project with the Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST). The international curriculum for training caregivers of trafficking survivors is currently at the pilot stage. Over 25 writers from around the world, both academic and field practitioners, have contributed their knowledge, insight, experience and time to this endeavor over the past year. There are 11 Units each, with topics ranging from The Global Issue of Sexual Slavery, Biblical Foundations for Response, Physical, Social, Psychological and Spiritual Needs of Survivors, Caregiver Issues and other important topics.

The two tracks of the curriculum, Academic and Community-Based, will be pilot tested in Sierra Leone, India, Cambodia and the United States. Evaluations will be received from these tests in order to make the curriculum more appropriate and effective in its final version.

The curriculum will be finalized and inaugurated in Washington, D.C. in October 2007. It will be available for use in academic settings as well as local community aftercare programs later in 2007.
